The Cadillac F1 team Employs Apollo Program Strategy to Build Unit from Scratch for Australian Startline.

Just over a full year previously at the Nevada Grand Prix, Cadillac were finally granted the green light as the world of Formula One's latest entrant for 2026. Constructing the team from the ground up has entailed a hectic work rate that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has equated to the NASA lunar mission. As the sport descends on the Vegas strip this race weekend, the team know the clock is ticking.

The Race Against Time to Australia

At the last event of the season to be held in the America, with around three months to go before they take to the track for the maiden outing in Australia at the first race of 2026, the Cadillac F1 project have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a sisyphean endeavor, they are aware there will never be adequate time.

The CTO, Nick Chester, came aboard the embryonic operation in March 2023 not long after it was formed, when the organization were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its heart ever since and gets a knowing grin when considering the journey.

“There might be five minutes thinking back at what you’ve done and go: ‘Amazing, how impressive what we’ve done in under three years,’” he says. “But then the next minute you realize: ‘Yes, we’ve still got a great deal to do.’”

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

The CTO achieved victories at Renault in the driver Fernando Alonso's championship-winning years of 2005/2006 and was in control of engineering strategy at the new Mercedes Formula E team, but no previous experience has truly matched the mission of bringing the all-American Cadillac brand, a works entry supported by the parent company, General Motors, into the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Building an grand prix team from scratch, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” he observes. “There's nothing comparable. In an well-set team you won't have the opportunity to transform cultural approach.”

With each day that elapses focus are more focused on the impending moment of truth in the Australian GP and expectations are being set realistically.

“It's reasonable to expect that any new team coming in is likely to start at the back but merely participating will be an accomplishment in itself,” Lowdon noted recently and while Nick Chester echoed this he believed the squad had a point to prove as well.
“Our primary goal we aim to demonstrate is that we deserve to be there,” he emphasizes. “In order that we show up and we function efficiently. We aim to demonstrate that we’re a proper team executing the right things on the track. Once we prove that our credentials are solid, then we will focus on forward movement subsequently.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Drive

In late summer they contracted Sergio Pérez and Valtteri as their racers for the 2026 season, a tandem notable for their invaluable experience in operating at the sharp end in two championship-winning squads, the Red Bull team and the Mercedes team, and Valtteri Bottas echoed the sentiment of fighting spirit.

“Certainly, we’re realistic,” he said. “We have a mountain of work to do, and it’s going to be most likely a challenging beginning, because it is F1. But we aren't joining to stay at the back. I believe with this setup, with these individuals, these people, there’s no reason why we won't be able to progress rapidly to a competitive level and achieve good results.”

To achieve that goal hiring has been in full swing, with personnel now up to over 400 and scheduled to hit the target of six hundred quickly. In addition to their existing facility at Silverstone, the squad are in the phase of finishing an HQ at Fishers in the Indianapolis area and there is the General Motors facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are developing the plant to manufacture the power unit, set for 2029 – until then they will use Ferrari power units – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. It is a complex organization, different from the movement in the sport for more centralization, and has inspired the new cultural approach to which the CTO alluded.

Apollo Inspiration

“It's closely based on the NASA moon mission,” remarked Lowdon ahead of the British GP in mid-season. “We are pragmatic, we understand how difficult it is. The deadlines, are incredibly tight. Alright, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have implemented, as opposed to the conventional chain of command, a non-hierarchical approach akin to that of Nasa’s, where there were a assortment of project teams all working on distinct elements of the project at a variety of locations.

“If you have to go through a protocol where an issue arises and they raise it up to their team leader, that manager consults a leader in another department, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” says Chester. “Therefore we enable team members to really get on with it. Eliminating management approval for everything is far more efficient and faster.”

Upcoming Challenges

The success of this agile strategy will be evaluated in the intensity of Grand Prix when the season begins and there is a considerable amount on the line for the sport, too. Cadillac have recruited as their development driver the emerging Californian Colton Herta
