EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
