RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
